Two Virginia women's soccer players picked in WUSA draft
Senior defender Kelly Worden and senior forward Darci Borski were selected in succession during the third round of the WUSA draft on Sunday.Worden was picked by the Boston Breakers, and Borski will be joining the Washington Freedom.
Worden, picked 19th overall, was team captain and an All-ACC first team selection for the 2002 Cavaliers, setting a school record with 2,040 minutes played on the season. She was also a NCSAA first team All Mid-Atlantic Region and first-team Virginia SID All-State selection.
Worden led a Cavalier defense that was among the top-ten in the nation last season. She will be joining Virginia's all-time leading scorer, Angela Hucles (1996-99), on the Breakers' roster.
Borski, who led Virginia in scoring in 2002 with 11 goals and 24 points and finished her career seventh in school history with 30 goals, was picked at No. 20 overall. She will join former Virginia teammate and fellow forward Lori Lindsay on the Freedom.Lindsay was acquired by Washington in a draft-day trade with San Diego.
Last season, Borski was a second-team All ACC forward and became only the third player in conference history to garner back-to-back ACC player of the week awards (Oct. 28 and Nov. 4).
Both former Cavalier players will begin their professional careers when the WUSA season opens on Saturday, April 5. Borski and Washington will be travelling to Carolina, while Worden and the Breakers will visit San Diego.
