Barber, Sharp compete in NCAA Zone B diving meet for Cavaliers

Both Virginia divers at the NCAA Regional Zone B Meet turned in respectable performances. Freshman Andrew Barber placed 19th in the men's one-meter dive Friday, in his first appearance in a Zone meet. Barber also placed 19th in the men's three-meter dive the following day, finishing six points shy of qualifying for NCAA finals.

Senior Alison Sharp also competed both days of the meet, placing 31st in the women's one-meter dive Friday and 26th on the three-meter board Saturday. Last weekend's meet, held in Auburn, Ala. was Sharp's fourth and final NCAA Zone Regional.

Junior diver Pete Amstutz missed the meet due to illness.

Otey, Mitchell represent Virginia at NCAA Indoor Track Championships

Senior All-American Kiamesha Otey long jumped over six meters Friday for the Cavaliers, placing 10th in the NCAA Indoor Track Championships. Otey came just short of qualifying for finals in the long jump and 60-meter dash. Otey lept 6.33 meters two weeks ago to win the USA National Championship.

Otey's teammate Eliese Mitchell was one of only 16 athletes who qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Mitchell competed in the weight throw Saturday, tossing the weight 17.46 meters. She is the Virginia record holder in three events: the hammer, the weight throw, and the indoor shot put.

Tuchband, Rizza named women's, men's ACC Tennis Players of the Week

Senior Virginia tennis player Jennifer Tuchband was named ACC Player of the Week for the second time this season after helping the Cavalier women's tennis team to a pair of road wins last week. Tuchband had doubles and singles victories in matches against Richmond and Florida State.

Freshman Rylan Rizza also was recognized as the conference Player of the Week after leading the men's team to victories over Georgia Tech and UMBC. Rizza had singles wins in both matches, improving his record to 30-7 on the season and breaking the Virginia record for singles wins by a freshman.
