Virginia to face off against Owls

The No. 5 Virginia women's lacrosse team will hit the road and travel to Philadelphia this Saturday as they take on Temple at 1 p.m. Virginia is the first team in the Owls four game home stand, while the Cavaliers continue on their own four game road trip.

Virginia (7-2, 1-1 ACC) rides a four game win streak into this weekend's game while Temple looks to bounce back after a 13-7 loss to Penn State on the road Wednesday.

Temple's only goalie, senior Sheena Oommen, led the Owls with 13 saves against the Nittany Lions.

The Cavaliers are coming off a dominating 19-10 win over UMBC this Wednesday where senior captain Lauren Aumiller became Virginia's all-time points leader with 252 for her career.

Virginia's other three wins have been against ranked opponents, but they will go into tomorrow's match-up with the same mindset they take to every game.

"I think that every team, ranked or unranked, has the ability to put a great game together," Virginia coach Julie Myers said. "So hopefully we're going in with some intensity and focus."

Temple (4-2) will be looking for the upset as they are just outside of the top twenty ranked teams in the nation.

Over the past three seasons Virginia has taken every meeting between the two teams.

"I think that everybody is going to be gunning for us because we're a ranked team," junior midfielder Caitlin Banks said. "I don't think we look over any team and every game is going to be a challenge for us to overcome."

In the game against UMBC, senior defender Tiffany Schummer and Banks both helped rally the Cavaliers to the win, gaining national honors from womenslacrosse.com and insidelacrosse.com for their play.

Myers likes the way her team has played over the past several weeks but still sees room for improvement.

"We want to try to minimize seeing the same mistakes over and over again," Myers said.

Schummer agreed with her coach, and said she wants to bring her team to the next level.

"Every game is important and I think this is a great chance to fix the things that we've been struggling with," Schummer said.

In any game, it is important to have a plan going into the match. Otherwise, a team could be overwhelmed by a better-prepared opponent. Virginia knows it must have a plan of attack against a dangerous Temple squad.

"Were going to have to establish the pace and the tone of the game and make sure we build from there," Myers said.

Virginia will have to contain Temple freshmen Patty Glavin on the offensive side of things in order to have a chance of winning. Glavin will look to repeat the three-goal performance she had against Penn State.

Either way, Myers wants to use every game as a learning experience before the ACC and NCAA tournament.

"We need to get better and we will," she said.
