Virginia traveled to No. 20 Clemson over the weekend, hoping to keep their ten-game winning streak intact. They weren't so lucky, as they came away with only one win in the three-game series.
The Cavaliers opened the series on the wrong note, losing the first game Friday, 9-4. Clemson jumped out to an early lead, scoring seven runs in the first two innings. Virginia finally got on the board in the third when sophomore catcher Scott Headd scored on a sacrifice fly.In the sixth inning, sophomore infielder Mark Reynolds added two more runs with a home run to center field. Unfortunately, it came too late for Virginia. Clemson's Tyler Lumsden (6-0) picked up the win while junior Chris Gale (2-2) suffered his second loss of the season.
Virginia fared much better in the second game of the series, winning a close 4-1 battle and handing the Tigers their first home loss. Through seven innings the Cavaliers dominated, holding Clemson scoreless and putting four runs on the board. Freshman Mike Ballard (2-2) took home the win with five scoreless innings of work. Jeff Hahn (2-2) picked up the loss.
Virginia failed to produce in Sunday's rubber match. Clemson crushed the Cavaliers, 9-2, for the series victory. The game was back and forth in the early going, but then Clemson plated two in the third, jumping out to a 7-1 lead. Virginia was unable to answer back. Steve Jackson (1-2) pitched Clemson to the victory, while freshman Matt Avery (1-2) picked up the loss.
