Three months of preparation culminated last night as the First Year Players put on their first performance of the spring semester, "Guys and Dolls."
Those who missed last night's performance will have other opportunities to attend, either tonight, Saturday or Sunday at 8:00 p.m. in the Student Activities Building.
"Guys and Dolls" is a musical with a standard plot based in Chicago. It centers around gangster life and has two main plot lines, both featuring romance and lots of singing and dancing, according to fourth-year College student and business manager Jenn Clardy.
"It's an interesting mix," said Karen Kalasky, first-year College student and actress.
First Year Players is a student-run organization that creates a unique working environment between students of all years.
Approximately 25 first-year and transfer students take the stage as performers for the show, while roughly 50 upperclassmen busy themselves backstage with everything from technical production to stage managing.
"It works really well for first years," Clardy said. "It is a great way for first years to get together and get to know other people in a social setting that still has a function."
Each semester, those interested in suggesting topics for the following semester's play may submit proposals to a small group of elected officials within the organization. A vote is taken by these members to determine what play will be performed.
Because the organization restricts acting positions to first year and transfer students, first years interested in drama are provided with a opportunity to display their talent.
"It is rare for first years to be involved in the Drama department because it is so hard to break into," said Katey Everett, first-year Architecture student and actress. "Here [at FYP] they can get drama experience."
The cast is excited about their remaining performances.
"We make our own stage and set, so it is rewarding to see everything come together," Everett said.
