Foxfield: Tips from a veteran on ending the year in style

This past weekend was good practice for me. I spent Saturday afternoon at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, watching the Baltimore Orioles lose in their typical maddening fashion to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. But watching the Orioles lose wasn't the practice I needed -- after all, I've had plenty of practice seeing them lose the past five seasons. Rather, I needed a day of drinking in the sun in preparation for this weekend's Foxfield Races. And as I write this, sunburned and hungover, I think I'm ready for it.

Personally, I can't think of a better way to get prepared for finals week, although I hear "studying" is starting to catch on. Still, you don't want to spend this Saturday in the library, since practically the entire school will be at the Foxfield races. The only people who won't be there are clearly nerds -- the kind of guys who collect bugs and have imaginary girlfriends.

Finals week is going to be stressful enough, so why start sweating it now? A day full of drunken debauchery provides the temporary solution we all seek. We all have days where we just want to escape reality for a while and let good old Jim Beam do the thinking for us. I call those days "weekdays." This Saturday gives us all an excuse to forget our troubles, take an afternoon off and end the school year in style.

Having spoken with several first years, I know many of you youngsters aren't sure what to expect. As a three-year Foxfields veteran and Cavalier Daily columnist, I feel as if it's my duty to share some of my wisdom. So below is a list of tips I've comprised. If you stick to these guidelines, you can be assured of a fun-filled afternoon. In no particular order, here are those five tips:

1) Start the morning off right, and eat some breakfast. If you want to make it past noon, shots of whiskey are not the eye-opener you need. Rather, you want to get some carbohydrates in your system, so you have plenty of energy for the day ahead. Be creative! Treat yourself to kegs and eggs, or turn your orange juice into a screwdriver. Just make sure you're not passing out before you get to the track.

2) For guys: Wear an undershirt under your dress shirt. At some point during the day, someone is going to spill a drink on your shirt. It's inevitable. Most of the time, it will be an accident. But if you have a smart mouth like me, eventually someone is going to throw a drink in your face. When that happens, and your shirt is stained, you'll be glad you have an insurance plan.

3) For ladies: Bring a roll of toilet paper in your purse. I won't get into the reasoning, as I'm sure most of you can imagine why you'll need it.

4) Don't gamble on the horses. As an avid sports fan, I've been known to place a few wagers here and there. I've bet on football, basketball, tennis, golf
