The release party for this semester's edition of "iris: a journal about women," entitled "Women in Global Perspectives," will be held tonight from 6-8 p.m. The party will be held at the Prism coffeehouse, located on the corner of Rugby Road and Gordon Avenue.
Free food provided by local Charlottesville restaurants, journal readings and live music will be featured at the kickoff.
The organization holds a release party for each edition, averaging an attendance of approximately 50 people at each event.
"iris" is a women's journal sponsored through the University Women's Center in association with the Studies in Women and Gender program. 11 University intern students produce the journal, although submissions for the publication, are received from both local and national communities, according to third-year College student Megan Dillman.
The journal is a 90-page collection of literary works including fiction, narratives, poetry and photo essays aimed at displaying a variety of feminist opinions and perspectives. "iris" has received national recognition in both academic and non-academic settings, including praise from "Ms" magazine.
"iris" has been in production since 1980. Last year the journal was somewhat "revamped" from its previous, more scholarly theme.
"We tried to aim it at more of a younger, college age group," Dillman said. The change was made in an attempt to target more readers with its less academic focus.
Despite its current distribution of 2500 copies, the "iris" staff hopes that its new style will attract more readers with each edition, Dillman said.
Each semester a different theme is chosen for the magazine, with topics ranging from "Women on the Web" to next semester's issue, which will deal with passions.
"The topics are really diverse," Dillman said.
The students who produce the journal choose the varied themes each semester.
"We all talk around ideas and the one that seems to be the most relevant for exploration is what we choose," Dillman said.
Tonight will be the first opportunity to purchase the new edition of "iris." It will also be available at the University Bookstore as well as the Women's Center throughout the remainder of the semester and into the fall. A year subscription is $9, or each edition may be purchased for $5.
