Two Virginia swimmershonored by ACC

Virginia swimming nearly swept the ACC swimming awards announced yesterday, garnering five of the six honors.

Freshman Fran Crippen earned the titles of ACC Men's Swimmer of the Year and Rookie of the Year -- the first athlete ever to win both awards in the same season. Crippen's rookie campaign with Virginia included first-team All-American honors at the 2003 NCAA Championships in the 500 and 1650 freestyles.

Fellow first-year Cavalier Rachael Burke was named ACC Women's Rookie of the Year. Burke also earned first-team All-American honors in both the 500 and 1650 freestyles.

Securing the title for the 19th time out of 25 years, head coach Mark Bernardino was named both Men's and Women's ACC Coach of the Year. Under Bernardino in 2003, Virginia men's and women's swimming each won the ACC Championship.
