Having already added two big-name schools this summer with Miami and Virginia Tech, the ACC has now begun discussions with Notre Dame in an attempt to secure a 12th member for the conference.
The ACC has discussed several different scenarios with the Irish; most notably one which would change Notre Dame's football status from independent to a member of the ACC. Other options may place Notre Dame into the ACC in all sports but football with the Irish playing a limited ACC football schedule.
Since June's vote of 6-3 to reject Boston College's bid for ACC status, the league has still been seeking a 12th member in order to ensure a football championship game. The odds of being rewarded with the benefits of the $10 million championship are slim because of NCAA regulations allowing only conferences with 12 or more teams to hold a championship game.
Experts say that odds are against persuading the Irish to join the ACC at this point; the league is expected to review Boston College's situation with the possibility of a future invite for 2004 if Notre Dame declines.
