This Sunday represents one small step for the Virginia women's golf team and one giant step for women's golf at the University of Virginia.
The women's golf team tees off in its first competitive match ever Sunday when they face Richmond at Birdwood Golf Course. The match will begin at 10:30 a.m.
The Cavalier squad, comprised of one senior and six freshmen, will take on the Spiders in match play. This weekend's round also will serve as preparation for the Cavaliers' first tournament, the College of Charleston's Cougar Classic, Sept. 15-16.
Coach Jan Mann, who coached the U.S. golf team in the Collegiate Golf Championship against Japan this past July, sees the inaugural schedule as a challenge for her young team.
"Our tournament schedule will definitely put us to the test," Mann said. "We will be competing against just about every top-ranked team in the country. Hopefully, we will extend our season with post-tournament play."
Virginia's women's golf team has been made possible due to an endowment given by the late William C. Eacho, Jr., who donated $1.4 million to fund women's golf scholarships.
