An informational meeting of the Individual Rights Coalition became a forum for heated debate last Wednesday night as students traded opinions on the possibility of a mandatory diversity training program.
The meeting, intended for the introduction and organization of the IRC, was attended by both supporters and critics of the proposed diversity initiative. Members of the IRC oppose the implementation of a Web-based training program if it is required for course enrollment.
Since Sept. 15, the IRC has made its views known with a table on the Lawn, visits to student organizations and fliers encouraging community members to visit the group's Web site.
Four days on the Lawn have yielded a 500-signature strong petition, but the IRC also has incurred criticism.
At Wednesday's meeting, Student Council President Daisy Lundy interrupted proceedings to describe the proposed diversity training program, said Ali Ahmad, an IRC member and meeting attendee.
At one point in the meeting, Lundy also walked to the front of the room and wrote "www.davidduke.com" beneath the address for the IRC's own Web site, Ahmad added.
