Go Greek

Academic.

Social.

Philanthropic.

Leadership.

Brotherhood and sisterhood.

These are some of the top reasons to be Greek, members of the Inter-Greek Council told first-years, transfers and Greeks in attendance at the Greek 101 session last night.

Greek Week was supposed to kick off with a barbecue on the Lawn, but that event was cancelled because of inclement weather. Instead, the week commenced with Greek 101, intended to educate first years about the benefits of being Greek.

IGC members explained what their council does, what it stands for and how they operate. They made a power point presentation and gave away t-shirts and prizes to students who volunteered to answer questions.

The purposes of Greek Week are two-fold, said fourth-year College student Inter -Sorority Public Relations executiveAlyse Garber .

"It is earlier than in the past to reach out to first years and transfers and show them the multi-faceted aspects of sorority and fraternity life," Garber said. "It is also to unite the councils and celebrate being Greek."

Greek 101 and a concert featuring a Fuzz & Dave Matthews Cover band Sunday are geared toward first years and transfers. The other events of Greek Week, however, are intended for current members of the Greek system.

There will be a safety fair today in Mad Bowl sponsored by the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. There will be firemen and policemen present.

A Greek party Friday night and a community service project Sunday will further unite Greeks associated with all four councils -- ISC, Inter Fraternity Council, Black Fraternal Council and Multicultural Greek Council.

Garber said the service project will be to re-beautify Poplar Ridge, a ropes course and hiking area for students behind Slaughter Recreation Center.
