Stewart Claims First Round Win in National Pro Futures Event in California

Tuesday, Cavalier men's sophomore tennis player Doug Stewart advanced to the second round of the Main Draw at the Countrywide Pro Futures Event in Ojai, California.

Stewart defeated Sanjin Sadovich, the number 735 ranked tennis player in the world, in a three set battle, 6-7 (7-5), 6-3, 7-5. The match lasted for over three and half hours, but when the smoke cleared, Stewart had defeated the Canadian and earned his first ATP ranking point.

Stewart, ranked No. 26 in collegiate tennis, entered the tourney as a wild-card entry. In the second round match he will face either Luke Gregorc, who is ranked No. 699 in the world or the No. 4 player in the NCAA, Alex Vlaski.

Stewart and the rest of the Virginia men's tennis team this weekend will host the second annual Virginia Invitational at the Snyder Tennis Center. Play begins at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. The field includes Alabama, Harvard, Purdue, VCU, Wake Forest and William & Mary.
