Virginia soccer players receive ACC honors

After a highly successful weekend, two members of the Virginia women's soccer team were honored on national teams of the week.

Freshman defender Becky Sauerbrunn from St. Louis, Mo., and sophomore midfielder Kelly Hammond from Bowie, Md., were on Soccer America's Team of the Week and Hammond also was the ACC Player of the Week. Sauerbrunn was a stalwart on the defense that held formerly second-ranked Santa Clara to seven shots in a 4-1 Cavalier victory on Friday. The defense then held formerly 22nd-ranked Southern California to six shots to win the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic 3-0 on Sunday. Hammond added the game-winning goal in both games, along with an assist in Friday's upset.

The Cavaliers, now ranked seventh in the nation, gets back to action on Friday on the road against the Dartmouth Big Green in the Dartmouth Adidas/Hypertherm Tournament. The tournament concludes on Sunday when Virginia takes on Harvard in the final round of play.
