The Virginia men's cross country team was ranked 15th in the Mondo Men's Cross Country Poll released Monday. This is the highest ranking for the team in 19 years.
The last time the Cavaliers were ranked higher than 15th was in 1984, when the team finished fifth in the NCAA Championships.
The Cavaliers are led this season by junior Will Christian of Great Mills, Md., who was named ACC Runner of the Week Monday for the second time this season. Christian has been the first Virginia runner to cross the finish line in this season's two meets.
This past weekend Christian finished first among the ACC runners, and sixth overall, in the American Cross Country Festival in Cary, N.C., with a time of 25:55.3 in the 8K race. Senior teammate Walt Kingsberry finished less than five seconds behind, in seventh place overall.
Virginia, unranked before this week, finished fifth overall in the meet and was the top-finishing ACC school. The victory upset two league-ranked teams, No. 14 N.C. State and No. 27 Duke.
Christian received his last ACC Runner of the Week award after his Sept. 13 first place finish at the home Lou Onesty Invitational with a time of 24:29.9. Virginia finished third overall in that event.
The Cavaliers will travel to Manassas, Va., for the George Mason Invitational this Saturday.
