Virginia looks to rebound in North Carolina tourney

After an impressive performance in their first tournament four weeks ago, the men's golf team looks to return to top form this weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C.

At the Kiawah Island Collegiate at Turtle Point Golf Club in South Carolina Sept. 8-9, the Cavaliers finished fifth out of 14 teams. Three Virginia golfers finished in the top 25, led by sophomore Eamonn McLoughlin's 2-over 146. Freshman Daniel McCurk and senior captain Jeremy Luce finished 17th and 23rd, respectively, with total scores of +3 and +4. Virginia's total of 592 (+16) was three better than that of ACC-rival Florida State.

The season's second tournament, the Mason Rudolph Collegiate at the Golf Club of Tennessee, Sept. 22-23, was dominated by the SEC, leaving Virginia in 16th place out of 18 teams. The Cavaliers' total score of 606 was eight strokes higher than Florida State, who tied for 11th, 43 behind tournament champion Alabama-Birmingham. Sophomore Brad Tilley was the only Virginia golfer in the top 25, with a four-over-par total of 146. Tilley reached regional and national recognition earlier this summer as the winner of the Metropolitan Golf Association's "Ike" Stroke Play Championship in New York. He attributes much of his collegiate success to those around him, especially in coming back after a disappointment at the Mason tournament. "That was the worst tournament in my college career," Tilley said. "I had a few things in my swing not going so well."

For help fine-tuning his swing, Tilley sought the advice of coach Mike Moraghan, as well as his teammates.

"The kids on the team are all great players; there's always something to learn from each one of them," Moraghan said. "Everyone likes to think of golf as an individual sport, this is really a team."

This weekend's tournament features a strong regional field, including host UNC-Chapel Hill. This is Virginia's first tournament in North Carolina since April's ACC Championship, where the Cavaliers finished 7th. Most of the field will be playing the recent redesign of the Finley Golf Course at UNC for the first time, including the entire Cavalier team.
