Cavaliers receive honors

Nine Virginia athletes were honored with awards in three sports yesterday.

Six members of the 2003 football team (6-5, 4-4 ACC) were named to the All-ACC team. Tight end Heath Miller was the only first-team selection. Miller is also a semifinalist for the John Mackey award as the nation's best tight end.Matt Schaub grabbed the second-team spot behind N.C. State's Philip Rivers. Placekicker Connor Hughes also received a berth on the second teambehind Maryland's Nick Novak. Running back Wali Lundy, guard Elton Brown, and defensive lineman Chris Canty were also selected.

Cavalier men's soccer goaltender Ryan Burke and defender Matt Oliver were named to Soccer America's Team of the Week for week 12. Oliver also won the honor for week 3.

Field hockey captain Katie Jo Gerfen was named to two All-American teams: The STX-NFHCA All-American third team and the Womensfieldhockey.com second team. Gerfen, who was also named to the All-ACC team last week, was the second-leading scorer on the field hockey team (10-10).
