The nation's newspapers are calling Margaret Cho exuberant, provocative and brilliant. From performing in small clubs as a teenager in the 1980s, Cho has developed into a nationally renowned comedian. She wrapped up a 37-city tour called "Notorious C.H.O." in the spring. She is now in the midst of her new comedy tour "Revolution."
The University Programs Council, with support from the Queer Student Union, the LGBT Resource Center and the Asian Student Union, made sure Charlottesville would be one of Cho's stops on her new tour.
Cho will be performing tonight at 8 at the Charlottesville Performing Arts Center. Tickets are on sale at Newcomb, Plan 9 and musictoday.com and are $8 for students and $12 for the public.
"We heard about her through a bunch of other colleges," said fourth-year College student and Comedy and Variety Chair for UPC Kinjal Sheth. "She performed at MIT and Liberty in the past month, and they gave really good reviews of her."
Just in general, Sheth said, there has been a big demand for her at the University in the past couple of years. In addition, UPC has not recently brought a female comedian to the school.
Sheth said that Cho's show is very personal, very witty and very raw.
"She is not hiding anything for you," Sheth said. "She puts it all out there. She is telling a story, but she is doing it from a humorous aspect."
Some of the topics Cho covers are her adventures in Thailand's red light district, child birth, bodily functions and her ex-boyfriend, according to her Web site (margaretcho.com). Sheth added that she also makes fun of her mom and talks about what it is like to grow up Asian.
"She talks about everything, and it is adult humor so everyone can relate to the situation or see how a situation could arise," Sheth said. "Even if you are not big on comedy shows, this is something different and guaranteed to make you laugh."
