Notre Dame gives further consideration to joining ACC

As a result of the conference realignements over the past few weeks, Notre Dame has seriously considered applying for full membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference, USA Today reported yesterday.

The Fighting Irish are members of the Big East in most sports, but their storied football program has been independent for over 100 years.

The ACC's new additions of Miami, Virginia Tech and Boston College make a jump to the ACC more appealing to Notre Dame, who has struggled to a 3-6 record this season in football.

Two officials within the ACC with knowledge of the moves told USA Today that Notre Dame's recent interest is considered to be serious. One of the officials also said the school had contacted the Big Ten.

These officials in the ACC said the Irish are exploring the move because of uncertainty over its position in the Bowl Championship Series. Currently, Notre Dame has a deal to be included with the six main conferences in a BCS bowl, if the Irish finish high enough in the BCS standings.

In September, several newspapers reported that the conference was pursuing the Fighting Irish as a possible twelfth member, an invitation that eventually went to Boston College. At the time, Notre Dame officials denied the reports.

As an independent, Notre Dame has more freedom in scheduling and its own lucrative television contract with NBC. The move to the ACC could boost the football image and recruiting base of the school.
