The fact that professors wield the pens that will soon ink final grades isn't the only reason students might be seen sweet-talking their teachers for the next few days; This week is also American Education Week.
The celebration was begun by The National Education Association and applies to grade schools, high schools and institutions of higher education nationwide. According to www.NEA.org, the National Education Association's Web site, American Education Week is meant to be "observed in all communities annually for the purpose of informing the public of the accomplishments and needs of the public schools and to secure the cooperation and support of the public in meeting those needs."
Locally, the University chapter of Student Virginia Education Association hopes to raise awareness of American Education week and encourage students across Grounds to participate in the effort to appreciate educators.
"Our goal this week is to let U.Va. students know about SVEA, and ask them to show appreciation of their professors," said Lianna Moss, SVEA President and fourth-year Education student.
The SVEA, made up of 87 Education students, plans to take part in American Education Week by handing a Three Musketeers candy bar to every Curry School professor. The candy bars will be accompanied by the message "All for one and one for all for education."
