Virginia tops Terps in conference matchup

The Virginia volleyball team returns from College Park with a comeback win over Maryland. The Cavaliers, now riding a four-game winning streak within the conference, rallied following a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Terrapins 3-2.

This win was Virginia's fourth straight ACC road victory and improves the Cavaliers to 24-7, 8-7 ACC. Virginia had been struggling in conference play, but Tuesday's come-from-behind win garnered the Cavaliers a positive ACC record.

Junior middle Alexis Geocaris contributed 21 kills, seven block assists, two digs and led the team with the team-high .444 hitting percentage.

Outside hitter Paige Davis posted the game-high 22 kills. Davis added what was both a match and career-high 31 digs, securing the senior her second consecutive double-double on the season, as well as five block assists.

Libero Whitney Ashcraft once again came up big for the Cavaliers. The All-ACC player notched 24 digs, moving Virginia's standout senior into ninth place on the ACC's list for all-time digs with a career 1,544.

In addition, freshman setter Emily Kirkwood added a match-high 69 assists and contributed 10 digs, making this her eighth double-double of the season. The freshman also recorded three kills and two service aces.

Freshman outside hitter Lindsay Osco contributed 13 kills and 20 digs, sophmore outside hitter Kristin Chaney notched double digits in kills with 10 and a season-high 19 digs. Senior middle Shannon Boyle rounded out the Cavalier field with nine kills, six digs five blocks and two solo stuffs.

The Terrapins were led by Lynnsy Jones who recorded 18 kills and 13 digs. Following Jones was Maryland's Stephanie Smith who added 17 kills and nine of her teams 17 blocks.

Virginia led the first game 28-24, but let Maryland steal the win, 31-29. The Terrapins went up 2-0 with a 30-24 win. After that the Cavaliers took the next three games and the match win.

Virginia concludes their regular season and ACC play Nov. 16 when they face Florida State in Tallahasee. The ACC Tournament will take place Nov. 20-23 in Orlando, Fla.
