Back in action

There's nothing like new faces and a new challenge to spice up the cold winter days.

And Student Council's annual Winter Activities Fair from 12 to 5 p.m. today caters to students who want to do just that.

CIO's and other student organizations will fill the Newcomb Ballroom to explain their purpose as a club, how to join and answer any other question students might have.

According to Council Vice-President Eli DeJarnette, 80 groups will be at the fair. Organizations involved range from volunteer programs offered through Madison house, which contains hundreds of active members, to the more selective Club Lacrosse, which will be offering information on its rigorous twice-a-year tryout schedule used to select a privileged few new members.

"Most of the people we get to tryout sign up at the activities fair," said second-year College student and Men's Club Lacrosse Vice President Steve Crenshaw. "We take most of our players in the fall tryouts, but we always like to get a few for the spring too."

For those who think they have already either seen or heard of every club at the university, some new organizations, especially those based on more current events, will be hitting the scene at the fair. These include such clubs as 'Hoos for Lieberman and 'Hoos for Howard Dean, which provide a more specific alternative to the already well-established political clubs such as University Democrats or College Republicans.

As for broadly named clubs, like the History Club, or clubs that have unclear names, such as Circle K, the Winter Activities Fair will offer an opportunity for students to get to the root of these organizations quickly and easily without spending hours attending every meeting they see posted on flyers throughout campus.

Students who are unable to find a club that suits their appetite can create their own club by logging on to Student Council's Web site and filling out the proper application at uvastudentcouncil.com/ciocentral/.
