Marvin Sanders, former defensive coach of Nebraska, was named North Carolina's new co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach yesterday. In 2003, he helped lead the Huskers to a 10-3 record.
During his time as coach at Nebraska, the Huskers beat Michigan State in the Alamo Bowl, were ranked first in the country in pass efficiency defense and recorded 32 interceptions, the highest number in the nation.
Sanders has a long history of successful defensive coaching. Before joining the coaching staff at Nebraska, Sanders worked as the secondary coach for Colorado State University. In his two years there, the Rams had a 17-9 record and won the Mountain West Conference in 2002. Sanders spent one year coaching defensive ends and line backers at New Mexico State.
He also has spent time working at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he was the secondary coach for five seasons and the defensive coordinator for three years. While coaching at UNO, Sanders helped to lead the team to two North Central Conference wins and two appearances in the NCAA Division II playoffs.
In total, Sanders has 12 years of college coaching experience. "Marvin Sanders has proven to be one of the best college secondary coaches in the country over the past few years," said North Carolina head coach John Bunting.
