Super Bowl Baby!

This Sunday will mark the 38th Super Bowl extravaganza as the Carolina Panthers take on the New England Patriots in Houston, Texas. As usual, TV viewers will get their taste of good football, 2.5 million dollars worth of 30-second commercials and a half-time lineup including Janet Jackson, P. Diddy, Kid Rock and Nelly.

Approximately 1,500 miles from the heat of Houston, avid University football fans will be fixed in front of their televisions despite numerous papers, projects and assignments to complete.

"Hell yeah! Of course I'm watching it," fourth-year College student Wilson Castellanos said.

Students expressed different sentiments about which team should take home the highest honor of the NFL.

"I usually go for the underdog," Castellanos said. "This year I am hoping for Carolina."

Unlike Castellanos, second-year College student Eddie Jobe said, "I'm rooting for the Patriots because they beat my team, the Eagles."

Both Castellanos and Jobe said they are dedicated followers of the Super Bowl mania.

"I've been watching it more or less every year for the last four or five years," Jobe said.

Castellanos added that his football fanaticism exceeds watching the Super Bowl.

"I watch most of the Redskins games," he said. "Especially the ones against the Cowboys, of course."

As is custom, both Castellanos and Jobe said they will be celebrating the event with friends.

"Pizza, sodas and all the junk food is there," Jobe said.

"We have everything from Budweiser to tequila to sangria," Castellanos added. "We have chips too, but more beer than chips."

Football aside, students find the Super Bowl's entertainment aspects as exciting as the rivalry between New England and Carolina.

"If there isn't a team I'm rooting for, then I pay attention to the commercials," Jobe said.

Other students said they, additionally, are drawn by the cheerleaders.

First-year College student Alfredo De La Hoz said, "The NFL cheerleaders are so hot! It's unbelievable."

Students said only one factor rivals the passion of the Super Bowl -- fraternity bid night Saturday.

"I usually do watch the Super Bowl," first-year College student Edgar Fernandez said. "But then there is Saturday night."

Many University students will be out and about on Rugby Road, celebrating the end of fraternity rush along with the new pledges, on what is to be one of the most entertaining nights of the year.

"I love the game, the cheerleaders and the cool Bud light commercials," Fernandez said. "But I will be in bed recovering."
