Warner to lead National Governors Association

The National Governors Association announced yesterday that Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warner will serve as the next chair of the association, according to the Associated Press.

Warner will serve as chair for a one-year term, replacing current chair Dirk Kempthorne of Idaho.

Warner was elected to serve as vice chair in December and will assume his new position as chair at the association's annual meeting this summer. A vacancy in the vice chair's position became available when Mississippi's Democratic Gov. Ronnie Musgrove resigned following the loss of his seat to Republican Haley Barbour.

The National Governors Association alternates the chairmanship of its group between republicans and democrats annually.

Warner was elected governor of Virginia in November 2001 and currently is serving one four-year term without the possibility of reelection.
