If your busy schedule has caused you to lose track of the time, you will be reminded of this weekend's significance with the red and pink extravaganza of hearts and roses.
Tomorrow is Feb. 14, the infamous day when love and passion are packed into heart-shaped boxes of chocolate and romantic dinners. Here at the University, students typically choose to approach Valentine's Day with either enthusiasm, cynicism or -- well, indifference.
The enthusiastic spirit of the celebratory day was apparent in the "Send a Crush to your Crush" campaign, organized by First Year Council. First-year College student Natalie Kizou was one of the FYC members responsible for the sale of the bottles of Crush soda.
"We have sold around 110 bottles," Kizou said. "It is way more than we expected."
Kizou said she doesn't have a crush to surprise with a soda on Valentine's Day, but she still enjoys the atmosphere.
"There are a lot of cynics, but I think the holidays are good," she said.
In addition to the many single students at the University, there also are those lucky ones -- the ones with significant others.
Second-year Engineering student Neil Gunha is one of these boyfriends -- one that is enthusiastic about the "special" day.
"It is important to make your girlfriend feel wanted and that you can't take her for granted," Gunha said. "I am cooking dinner for my girlfriend."
Even though he recognizes the importance of the day, he said he realizes that it is just another day.
"Things you do on Valentine's Day, you can do on any other day," he said.
The excitement surrounding Feb. 14 at the University cannot be ignored because of the semi-formals and other specially planned events -- nor can the air of cynicism.
First-year College student Julia Pontecorvo said she has no special plans for tomorrow.
"Me and my friends will probably go to the Virginia Gentlemen's concert first," Pontecorvo said. "Then we will probably go out and celebrate that we don't have Valentines."
Pontecorvo said she finds the enthusiasm a little too overwhelming sometimes.
"It is a bit annoying, I am like go away," she said.
While some of the students find the spirit of Valentine's Day hard to ignore, others see it as just another day.
"I am going to Washington D.C. this weekend," first-year College student Yasemin Erseven said. "There is nothing special about this weekend -- not even good parties."
Whether you're feeling lovey-dovey, sitting at home and cursing the opposite sex or just doing your own thing, Valentine's Day is here. And if you don't have a boyfriend or girlfriend to kiss, you can always resort to Hershey's Kisses.
