Duke women's 51-game basketball win streak ends at hands of Florida State

The Duke women's basketball team saw its unprecedented run of dominance in the ACC come to a close Wednesday night, courtesy of Florida State. The 16 turnovers forced by the Seminoles helped carry them to an 80-74 victory in Tallahassee, snapping Duke's 51-game ACC winning streak.

It was the Blue Devils' first conference loss since Feb. 18, 2001, when they fell on the road at the hands of North Carolina State. The streak, which came up just two weeks short of its three-year anniversary, more than doubled the previous record of 22 consecutive ACC wins posted by the Virginia women from 1992-1994.

The Seminoles were an unlikely candidate to dethrone No. 2 Duke from the ranks of the unbeaten in the ACC, entering the game at .500 overall, and only 3-6 in conference. To top it off, they were mired in a four-game losing streak.

However, FSU received a confidence boost from a six-point loss to No. 12 North Carolina last Sunday and translated that confidence into the biggest victory in Florida St. history.

The closest Duke had come to defeat during their amazing run came last year in U-Hall, when Alana Beard went to the line with only eight tenths of a second on the clock and sank two free throws to catapult the then-top ranked Blue Devils to a 60-59 comeback victory.
