On May 16th, I will be walking down the Lawn, with a college degree in hand. Coming from France, I had no clue what to expect, except that I knew I would grow and mature as an individual. I can still picture myself arriving in 415 Balz, along with two suitcases and a heavy French accent. Since then, I have made a point of making the most out of my time here. I often explain to prospective students that half of what you learn takes place in the classroom; the rest is from your peers. In my case, I've been fortunate to come across so many different individuals over the course of my college career. You've taught me the meaning of honesty, passion and humility, three qualities The Cavalier Daily has demonstrated ever since I joined the paper as a photographer.
I joined the CD thinking it would be a great opportunity to wander around the University, attend events, and add my own little stone to the community. What I did not imagine however was that it was soon to become my home away from home.
The CD's strength relies in its staff's trust for one another. We all have our specific role; however, everyone is essential to the production of the paper. I cannot stress how much I have learned from each individual in the basement. A year ago, I took a shot in the dark and ran for the managing board, becoming the first international student since 1890. As chief financial officer, I had the opportunity to take care of a business, as well as voicing my opinion through lead editorials. It was overwhelming to work for a paper, which takes pride in serving the community, while staying financially and editorially independent.
This adventure hasn't been without difficulty. Late nights and lack of sunlight were our regular treat. Some events this year have been disheartening; nevertheless, we stepped passed obstacles collectively. I cannot be thankful enough towards those who have worked along my side, and those who have supported me these past years, so I'll thank you all 10,000 times -- through each printed edition of the paper.
To "Papa et Maman," merci beaucoup pour votre confiance et votre patience. Vous m'avez donné la liberté de réaliser un rêve, je vous en serai éternellement reconnaissant.
To 120 Dunova -- Suleyman, Austen, Mike, Jason, Ray, Macarena and Daniel- you have all made every minute of college a lesson of friendship and character. I've kept, and, at times, lost my sanity thanks to you guys.
To Caroline, I could not have gone through all this without you. You've been my ray of sunshine, making all these months unforgettable and the future bright.
To all those I could not name here -- 410's Balz, European Society, Fencing Club, ISAC and friends -- I hope we will find the time to enjoy the last semester and make the most out of it.
Now for the 114th Board,
Justin, you have a remarkable integrity and inner strength. It was a pleasure to work with you. You've set an example of excellence for us all. Enjoy the free time, you've earned it. Don't forget to watch your back in Europe
