Virginia wrestling splits weekend matches

The Cavalier wresting team narrowly defeated N.C. State but lost to Duke later Saturday night in two dual meets held in Raleigh and Durham.

Facing the Wolfpack, Virginia won 22-21 as a team after 133-pound Steve Hromada prevailed 7-6 in the final seconds over N.C. State's Garrett Cummings. At that point on Saturday afternoon, the Cavaliers improved to 8-4 overall, with an undefeated record in the ACC.

Later that evening, however, Virginia endured a heartbreaking loss against Duke, 21-17. Ahead 14-0 after four matches, the Cavaliers squandered their lead by losing five of the remaining six contests. Virginia led off the dual meet with four consecutive wins from Scott Moore, Aaron Martin, Paul Bjorlo, and Tim Foley, but in the last six bouts, the only Cavalier to achieve victory was Andrew Leffler. The team loss was Virginia's first in the ACC, dropping their conference record to 2-1.
