Tafelmusik anyone?

By Michelle Jamrisko Cavalier Daily Associate Editor

Internationally renowned musical groups -- the kind that charge upwards of 100 dollars a ticket for big city concerts -- have been visiting Grounds for over 50 years now, providing University students with the opportunity to see performances for five dollars.

The Tuesday Evening Concert Series, an organization that is not affiliated with the University but that collaborates with the McIntire Department of Music, offers seven concerts on Grounds each year.

Tonight the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, labeled by TECS Executive Director Karen Pellon as the "most awarded baroque chamber orchestra in Canada," will perform in the Old Cabell Hall auditorium at 8 p.m. The program includes pieces by Handel, Vivaldi and Bach.

TECS sells out of subscription tickets before each season, but tickets become available to the general public when subscribers call to cancel their tickets hours before the concert. Students are then allowed to purchase these "rush" tickets for five dollars. But Pellon doesn't think enough students take advantage of this offer.

"There are not as many [University students] at the concerts as I would like," she said. "That's why we instituted the rush tickets. The one problem that may deter people is that we do not qualify for Arts Dollars because we don't get funding from the University."

The TECS concerts this year have included pianists, violinists and orchestras, with artists from Japan, England and the Czech Republic performing.

"We provide a variety of highly recognized artists and ensembles, and we also present younger and rising artists who are also of international quality," Pellon said. "Sometimes we will bring an artist or ensemble that will not be familiar yet, and shortly thereafter they become famous."

Hosting such a variety of musical talent has not produced any one favorite type of concert, according to Pellon.

"People do love the piano recitals, violin recitals ... but people have been so receptive to everything," she said. "The chamber orchestra is very popular."
