The cult of the delivery food

Whether you are an Atkins diet fiend, devote yourself to the Zone or just think that keeping complex carbohydrates out of your diet is crucial to your form, one thing is certain. You are in college, and you order in food.

Having food delivered is one of the most frequent actions of many college students, and it owes its popularity mostly to its speediness.

"It's quick, easy and cheap, and also a lot of people don't have kitchens," second-year College student Erica Hemphill said.

Many students said the promptness of food delivery is vital to their hectic lives as college students.

"A lot of students pack their schedules, so they don't have time to cook," third-year Architecture student Heidi Shoemaker said. "It's easier for them to order."

Another aspect of the delivery culture that makes it a favorite is its availability to students at all times.

Third-year College student Yunis Lee pointed out the importance of delivery food at night.

"There are a lot of people who don't have cars so it's hard to take the bus or go to the Corner at night," Lee said. "It's so much easier to order."

Shoemaker also commented on the importance of delivery food during off-hours.

"A lot of people love to get Gumby's at night after they go out," she said. "It's all about the Pokey sticks."

Despite its popularity for late night fiestas, order-in food has nocturnal rivals.

"A lot of people in my dorm go to the Tree House or Littlejohn's for beer munchies," first-year College student Layton Hill said.

For those not wanting to cook or enjoy the oh-so-delicious dining hall food, pizza proves to be the most revered alternative.

"Domino's is the big thing here because they accept plus dollars," Hemphill said.

While most delivery food is a reasonably priced alternative to cooking and cafeteria food, ordering in Chinese food can be a little pricey.

"Personally, I think Chinese food is expensive, but other than that, pizza and College Inn are very good priced," Lee said.

Noonan agrees that delivery food is a cheap way of satisfying students' grumbling stomachs.

"Compared to a city or even making your own sandwiches, it's pretty cheap," he said.

The frequency of ordering in also increases as students move out of the dorms.

"I definitely order more food in now, because when you are a first year, you are required to get a full meal plan," Lee said. "As semesters go by, my meal plan is less and less, so I order more and more."

And yes, it is too bad for dieters that it's not carrots and celery, but a slice of pepperoni pizza and a Coke might be the best nighttime munchies.
