Center quits squad to pursue modeling

It didn't take much for Fayette Elliot to put two and two together.

Her daughter, who had previously expressed an interest in modeling, was in Milan, Italy, instead of in Charlottesville practicing with the women's basketball team. Basketball was becoming less of a priority for Deidra Chatman, and it was no longer a secret to Elliot.

"She didn't even find out about it until I was already in Italy," Chatman said. "She said that she had always known about my passion and wasn't surprised when she found out."

Elliot had always wanted her daughter to make it in basketball, but Chatman will no longer be pursuing that goal. Women's basketball coach Debbie Ryan announced on Friday that Chatman would be leaving the program.

"We will miss Deidra on the court," Ryan said in a release. "But, she will always be a part of our basketball family."

During Chatman's two years in the program, she had some difficulties with her family
