Over a dozen athletes who competed for the Virginia swimming team in the 2003-04 season have been invited to participate in the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials July 7-14 in Long Beach, Calif.
Rising juniors Rachel Burke and Brielle White along with rising sophomore Kimi Kelly are among the top Virginia women competing. Burke was the 2004 NCAA Championships runner-up in the 1500-meter freestyle, and is seeded 11th in the 800-meter freestyle. Kelly is seeded 17th in the same event. White is seeded No. 12 in the 100-meter backstroke.
Some of the top seeded men's swimmers include Michael Raab (No. 3 in the 200-meter butterfly), Fran Crippen (No. 6 in the 1500-meter freestyle) and Luke Wagner (No. 6 in the 200-meter backstroke).
A maximum of 26 men and 26 women will be selected to the Olympic team, with first priority given to all event winners and the top four in the 100- and 200-meter freestyle.
