Va. Tech QB Vick arrested, suspended

Known primarily as "Michael Vick's little brother," Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick is finally distinguishing himself from his older sibling -- with his police record.

The younger Vick was suspended indefinitely from the Hokie football team after a Virginia State police officer pulled him over for speeding and found marijuana in his vehicle.

Virginia Tech issued a statement Tuesday afternoon announcing Vick's indefinite suspension. Vick has also been suspended by football coach Frank Beamer from "participation in all team activities."

Only a few months earlier, Vick was charged with contributing to the delinquency of minors at a late-night party in Blacksburg. He was convicted of the charges in May. Two of Vick's teammates, running back Mike Imoh and wide receiver Brendan Hall, were also involved in the incident.

All three athletes will be suspended for the first three games of the upcoming season. The suspension for Vick could last longer, with his latest arrest.

In a separate statement also released Tuesday, Virginia Tech Athletic Director Jim Weaver said that "behavior above reproach should be the norm for Virginia Tech students" and although the conviction of the three football players is being appealed, he is "moving forward in the best interests of all concerned with disciplinary action."

Virginia does not play Virginia Tech until Nov. 27, which is at the end of the season for both teams.

According to Virginia State Police Lt. Gary Payne, Vick was stopped by officer Gary Ward early Saturday morning after traveling through police radar at 88 miles an hour -- 23 mph over the speed limit -- on Interstate 64 in New Kent County, Va., near his home of Newport News.

Vick was charged with a Class I misdemeanor for reckless driving and another Class I misdemeanor for marijuana possession. Vick was then allowed to leave the scene after signing a summons.

"It's very similar to being stopped for speeding," Payne said. "For a Class I misdemeanor, we don't find it necessary to detain the individual. They sign a summons and are released from the scene."

Vick's actions have already left a bad taste in some Virginia Tech students' mouths.

"I don't like him at all," Tech student and football fan Meredith Koeppel said. "He makes the school look bad. He doesn't show much responsibility at all."

Vick backed up quarterback Bryan Randall last season and was expected to battle Randall for the starting job this fall. Vick's older brother Michael is the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL.
