Despite giving up two late goals to send the game into extra time, the Cavaliers (6-3) beat the James Madison Dukes (1-7) by a 3-2 score Wednesday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va.
Virginia took control early in the contest, dominating the first 35 minutes of play before sophomore Biffy Cornelison finally netted the game's first goal in the 35th minute. The score remained 1-0 at the break. The Cavaliers added to their lead after halftime when freshman Amy Marotta scored off of a short corner in the 51st minute of play.
Thereafter, the JMU offense sprang to life and began putting pressure on Virginia's back line. After nearly 20 minutes of heavy fire, Virginia goalie Logan Carr finally let one through off of a shot corner with two minutes to play. The Dukes continued attacking and were rewarded with 15 seconds left as they notched the tying goal off another shot corner.
In extra time, Carr redeemed herself by stopping two troublesome Duke shots. Finally, Virginia junior Sarah Miller broke free down the right side and slid a pass across to sophomore Mia Link who put the ball past the JMU goalie, giving the Cavaliers their sixth win of the season.
Field hockey's next match is at Old Dominion this Sunday at 1 p.m.
