Kirkwood, Caldwell capture volleyball honors

Virginia freshman Sarah Kirkwood was named ACC Volleyball Player of the Week yesterday for the opening week of the 2004 season.

Kirkwood, an outside hitter from Tampa, Fla., has led the Cavaliers in kills in every match so far this season and has notched 85 kills on the year. She is the first Virginia player to win Player of the Week honors since Deanna Zwarich won the award in Nov. 2000.

Kirkwood was also named to the University of Louisville Courtyard by Marriot Tournament All-Tournament team.

She began with a season-high 28 kills in Virginia's match against Louisville Sept. 3 and totaled 63 kills and four service aces in the tournament.

Kirkwood was joined by teammate Melissa Caldwell on the team. Caldwell set her career high in digs twice during the tournament. She collected 24 digs against Louisville and then surpassed that total with a 26-dig performance against Jacksonville State.
