Although yesterday's rain and classes helped remind students that their lazy summer days are over, there is still one way to reconnect with summer. Many students have found tubing down the James River to be an enjoyable way to savor the last few days of warm weather.
"It was glorious," said third-year College student Dave Lee, who went on his fourth trip down the river last weekend.
The tubing trip consists of a four-mile stretch along the James River and typically lasts two to four hours. $15 per person covers the cost of a tube and a shuttle ride back to the starting point of the trip. Special rates are offered for large groups.
Although the shuttles can transport up to 125 people every 30 minutes during peak hours, owner Geneva Denby of James River Reeling and Rafting strongly recommends reservations for weekend trips.
"We get tons of students when school is getting out in the spring, and especially the first few days before school starts," Denby said. "We get crushed the Monday and Tuesday before school starts and end up transporting U.Va. students by the busload."
Lee said the size of the group changes the tubing experience, but added that both large and small groups make for a successful trip down the river.
"I went with a group of about 30 people last time, and it was harder to keep people together than with smaller groups, but it doesn't really matter," Lee said. "I plan on going the next day it's sunny."
Third-year College student Lauren Collins tubed with her sorority last spring and said the trip was a great way to unwind with friends.
"Some parts of it are shallow, and one person got stuck, but mostly it was just really relaxing," Collins said."It was a nice day and a good way to get some sun."
