"It's bullshit," third-year Engineering student Dave Maderas said. "They can run that place with three people."
For years Pavilion XI, better known as "the Pav," has been serving students favorite offerings such as smoothies, Chick-fil-A and wraps all day and even after the dining halls are closed. But this year to many students' dismay, the Pav's hours have been significantly decreased -- closing at 11 p.m. rather than 8 p.m.
Many students said they were upset by this change.
"It is a really big inconvenience for college students," third-year College student Hazel Gunmera said. "A lot of people I know are involved in late evening activities and are looking for something to eat after 9 p.m."
Second-year College student Katie Ergen is one of those students.
"Sometimes I come back from lacrosse so late that I want to eat something, and all the dining halls are closed," Ergen said. "And now the Pav is closed as well, so where am I supposed to eat?"
Other dining retail locations such as the Castle and the Treehouse are open after 8 p.m., but several students said that can prove to be inconvenient.
"Both the Castle and the Treehouse are by the new dorms which means that they are easily available to first years," Ergen said. "But I don't want to go all the way over there if I am in the library or coming out of a late discussion."
Second-year College student Billy Banta is another student who said he is unhappy about the changes.
"I like Chick-fil-A, smoothies and frozen yogurt," Banta said. "You sometimes feel like a parfait late at night -- is that a problem?"
Other students, however, expressed less concern and annoyance with the new schedule.
Fourth-year Engineering student Kyle Singleton, who frequented the Pav when he worked at the bookstore, said he believes that there are other ways to make up for the loss.
"If you plan around it, you can work it out," Singleton said. "You can get the Corner Meal Plan and get anything anytime at Little John's, White Spot or other places, and sometimes the food is better than Pav anyways."
Third-year College student Abby Fatade said she has another substitution in mind for the Pav.
"Corner's a little bit of a distance, so I'd much rather go home and find something to eat," Fatade said.
Students' dining choices have also changed with the replacement of the Bakery with the upcoming convenience store.
"It will be good to have a convenience store there, but it won't be the same," Gumera said. "Things don't move in and out of convenience stores very much, and there is no way it can suffice for real food that the Pav would have provided by being open late."
