Women's soccer earns 2nd conference victory with win over Florida State

The No. 3 Virginia women's soccer team extended the second best start in school history to 9-0-0 with a 1-0 defeat of the Seminoles Friday in Tallahassee, Fla.

As has been the case for the majority of the season, the defense performed well for the Cavaliers. Virginia held Florida State to just five total shots as well as no corner kicks, the first time the Seminoles had been held without a corner in 110 games.

After controlling play for the majority of the first half, the Cavaliers headed into the break tied with their conference foes, 0-0. But just two minutes into the half, sophomore Ariel Thompson took advantage of a bad pass by the FSU defense, broke free for 60 yards and placed the ball in the top right corner of the net for her first goal of the season.

The Seminoles had a few decent chances to tie the game in the second half but a pair of saves by Virginia goalkeeper Christina de Vries stunted any attempt at a FSU comeback. With the win, the Cavaliers improved their record to 2-0 in the ACC heading into games this week -- tomorrow night at home against Richmond and Friday night at Wake Forest.
