Virginia baseball competes in Orange versus Blue World Series

Virginia baseball's Orange team won the first game of its second annual Orange versus Blue World Series Tuesday.

The Orange versus Blue World Series consists of three intra-squad scrimmages, each seven innings long, held as a part of the varsity baseball team's fall practice.

In the first game, first-year assistant coach Joe Hastings led the Orange team past second-year assistant coach Karl Kuhn and the Blue team in a convincing 6-0 victory. Left-handed pitcher Alex Smith threw five scoreless innings and allowed only one hit en route to the Orange team's win.

Freshman Sean Doolittle led the Orange team in hits, going 3-for-4 with one RBI. All-American candidate Ryan Zimmerman had a solid performance as well, going 2-for-4 while getting on base four times. He also drove in two runs and scored another two, himself. Junior Mike Ballard got the start for the Blue team and allowed six runs (three earned) in his four innings pitched.

Game two of the series was played last night, and game three is scheduled for today at 4 p.m.
