Virginia's acceptance of a bid to the MPC bowl in Boise, Idaho Wednesday spoiled the plans of the Champs Sports Bowl officials, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
After resisting initial urges to bypass the ACC and select a school from another conference, Champs Sports Bowl organizers are apparently planning to invite Georgia Tech for their Dec. 21 bowl after releasing the Yellow Jackets from consideration last week.
A week ago, the Orlando bowl officials made preparations to invite the loser of the Virginia-Virginia Tech game to speed up the bowl selection process.
Bowl executives also dropped Clemson, North Carolina, and Georgia Tech from consideration to appease ACC Commissioner John Swofford.
North Carolina, tied for fourth in the ACC, accepted a bid from the Continental Tire Bowl and Clemson, tied with Georgia Tech for sixth in the ACC, removed itself from any bowl consideration after their brawl with South Carolina in the season finale.
The Champs Sports Bowl, which gives the fourth highest payout in the ACC, was left with one team from the group of Miami, Florida State, Virginia, and Virginia Tech.
But immediately following Virginia's loss to Virginia Tech, school officials announced they would not accept a bid to any bowl that conflicted with their final exam schedule from Dec. 13 to 21.
Florida State accepted a bid to the Gator Bowl and the winner of the Miami-Virginia Tech game is set to go the BCS Sugar Bowl and loser to the Peach Bowl.
That leaves the Yellow Jackets as the only bowl eligible team left in the ACC and Orlando bowl officials may announce their plans as soon as today.
