Former University student and UTS bus driver Chyler Adam Ebersold was reported missing Saturday afternoon. He was last seen Thursday night around 11 p.m. Concerned friends, family members and police continued to search for the 23-year-old yesterday, local police said.
Ebersold is an approximately 5-foot-6-inch Caucasian male with blond hair and blue eyes, weighing between 190 and 200 pounds. Police do not know what he was wearing when he disappeared. According to Jo Anne Ebersold, Chyler's mother and a University employee in the Donor Relations Department, the search is especially urgent because of her son's medical needs as a Type I diabetic.
"She is desperate because of his medical condition," said Wendy Flynn, Jo Anne Ebersold's sister. "If he goes too long without food or insulin there won't be any finding him."
Jo Anne Ebersold said her son had been despondent recently after he was let go from his employment as a UTS bus driver. She also said he left a brief note of undisclosed content which was discovered shortly after his disappearance.
"There's nothing in it that conclusively says that he is suicidal," Charlottesville Police Sgt. Steve Dillon said. "We are concerned more so with the medical condition right now than with the note. However, there's a two-day time span in between the time he was last seen and the time he was reported missing, and frankly we don't have much to go on."
The search focused on the area around Chyler Ebersold's residence, 1904 Stadium Rd., yesterday. Jo Anne Ebersold said members of the Charlottesville, Albermarle and University Police departments were participating in the search, as well as 30 to 40 volunteers.
Charlottesville Police Sgt. David Jones said the police had no leads as of yesterday.
Chyler Ebersold was last seen Thursday night by his roommates and heard walking his dog Friday morning. His car and cell phone were left at his residence, leaving police to conclude that he left on foot. According to Flynn, Chyler Ebersold has been hospitalized several times recently for low blood sugar after being found comatose by his roommates.
"If you don't eat or take your insulin, your blood sugar dips," Flynn said. "Once you get so low, you don't know that you're low."
Chyler Ebersold graduated from Abermarle High School in the spring of 1999 and entered the University's Engineering School in the fall of the same year. After three years as a student and bus driver, he left the University for academic reasons.
Police said the search will continue indefinitely until Chyler Ebersold is found. Individuals with information pertaining to the case are asked to contact the Charlottesville Police at 970-3280.
