Fixin' to get a fix

As you stomp your way through the slushy snow and freezing wind on your way to class, the craving hits. You are tired, cold and in dire need of a caffeinated mocha. Where do you go?

With new spots for snacks and coffee springing up all around Grounds, the decision is more difficult today than ever before.

While most students may think of Greenberry's and Starbucks as the dominant sources of coffee, some prefer other locations.

"I think that a third option is the Java City at the West Range Cafe," second-year College student Brian Yoakam said. "It has great coffee and food."

Yoakam also praised the Café for its convenience.

"The Café is new, so a lot of people don't know about it yet, and it is not as crowded as places like Greeneberry's," Yoakam said. "It's a really good place for students who are in a rush and near the Lawn. If you're in a hurry, going all the way to Starbucks on the Corner is really inconvenient."

In addition to the convenient location of the West Range Café, Yoakam said its atmosphere also is an attraction.

"It's a lot like Starbucks in atmosphere, with couches and a fireplace," Yoakam said.

Although many students said that Starbucks was not a top choice because of its poor location, they may soon change their minds.

Starbucks now has self-serve Interactive Cup brewers available at locations on Grounds such as the fourth floor of Clemons Library, the AFC and the Law School and will soon be at Newcomb Hall, according to an Aramark press release.

Second-year College student Eileen Kim said that she thinks the Interactive Brewers will draw a crowd.

"If Starbucks makes itself more available on Grounds, then people will go there because of its name," Kim said.

Otherwise, Kim said she tends to get coffee at whichever location is closest at the time.

"Since I'm not an avid [coffee] drinker, I just go to wherever is convenient," Kim said. "If I'm on Grounds, I go to Greeneberry's. If I'm driving around, I go to Starbucks."

As the coffee war continues into the spring semester, only time will tell which location will become the favorite of University students.
