Questions for the Idol

Recently, one man and four syllables have captivated the University Grounds: Travis Tucker. Every week, we crowd around our televisions, live vicariously through Tucker and pray that Simon recognizes the talent placed in front of him. The Cavalier Daily was recently granted an interview with Tucker and had a chance to hear about his experiences in Hollywood.

Cavalier Daily: How has being a part of an a capella group helped you in this competition?

Tucker: Well, in reality, a capella is so different from this. It's a very different kind of singing, here versus there. Here, we have the best sound people, the best behind-the-scenes crew working everything out. However, learning about different types of singing has really helped me out: working on the finesse and moving in and out and such. Probably the most important thing I have taken with me is stage presence. An audience is an audience no matter what, and so presenting myself to an audience really doesn't change.

CD: Is the excitement there in Hollywood a bitmuch sometimes, or are you taking it all in well?

Tucker: It has just been an awesome, amazing experience. Very unreal. I wouldn't say it's been too much to handle, just very unreal. It's strange to know that just a couple of weeks ago I was sitting in my dorm room and now I have bodyguards and professional singing coaches and photo shoots. It has all happened very, very fast. It's been a veryquick transition, but a very good one.

CD: Win or lose, are you still going to pursue singing?

Tucker: Well, singing is a very unstable career. I came to U.Va. with the intentions of being a math teacher, and I would still love to do that. I don't have to win, but I'm certainly going to ride this wave as long as it lasts. It's good to have U.Va. to fall back on in case this whole thing doesn't work out, but I'm going to keep pushing as long as I can. I have good help around here to keep me going.
