Doolittle Makes 2005 National Team

Virginia freshman baseball player Sean Doolittle was named to the 2005 USA Baseball National Team Friday. Doolittle is a first baseman/pitcher for the Cavaliers. His presence marks the second year in a row that Virginia will have a player on the team. In 2004, short-stop Ryan Zimmerman represented the Cavaliers.

Tryouts for the 22-man roster were from June 27-30 on the campus of North Carolina State University. The team has already begun competition, playing teams from the NECBL. They will take the American pastime on the road today when the team travels to Japan for the 34th Annual USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star series. The team will then travel to nearby Taiwan for a five-game series taking place between July 15-19. Once returning to the United States, the team will play a series against Italy and one against Nicaragua. Steve Smith of Baylor is the head coach of the 2005 team. Virginia is one of four ACC schools with a representative on the team and are joined by Miami(Fl.), Georgia Tech and Florida State. Miami(Fl.) and Georgia Tech each have two players on the team.
