Originally hired as head coach of the women's tennis team in 1983, Phil Rogers announced his retirement from the position on July 8.
Rogers compiled a 260-233 record during his 23 years at Virginia and sent seven teams to the NCAA tournament. The 260 victories rank second all-time in the ACC. Before his retirement, he was the longest-tenured coach in the conference.
A graduate of Virginia in 1971, Rogers worked as a professional coach before coming to back to Virginia to head the women's team. He coached tennis legend Martina Navratilova from 1979 to 1981 as she climbed to No. 1 in the world rankings.
