AS SOON as first years come to Grounds and move into their dorms, barely after they have had a chance to unpack and meet the stranger they will be living with for the next nine months, they are swept up into a host of activities, lectures and opportunities as Fall Orientation begins.
While Fall Orientation does an excellent job of exposing students to the academic and social opportunities at the University, further involvement of student organizations would provide students with an opportunity to see the integral part these groups play in the University community.
Programs for Fall Orientation include a wide range of opportunities for first years to meet each other and become acquainted with their residence, starting with dinner with the hall or suite, followed by "Hoos in the House." Academically, a wide range of opportunities are also made available to new students. Students meet with their Association Dean on Sunday, followed by individual meetings with faculty advisors. A variety of information sessions, such as "Essentials for First Year Pre-Meds," are also offered.
Several student organizations are already involved in Fall Orientation programs. Among the most involved is the University Programs Council, which, according to the UPC Web-site, provides "Greeters" on move-in day and hosts several special events in the first few weeks of school, including hypnotist Tom Deluca, who typically attracts an audience of over "10,000 screaming Wahoos."
