Friday night, the University of Virginia men's soccer team began its season with a 2-0 victory over UC-Riverside in the first game of the UCSB Adidas Classic at Hardner Stadium in Santa Barbara, Calif.
No.6 Virginia had multiple chances to score, yet was shut out until the 55th minute, when junior Adam Cristman headed home a cross by sophomore Jeremy Barlow to score the first Cavalier goal. While goalkeeper Ryan Burke kept UC-Riverside scoreless, senior Joe Vide set up Barlow, who beat the UC-Riverside keeper one-on-one to make the score 2-0 in the 72nd minute. Virginia outshot UC-Riverside 18-6, and Burke needed only two saves, both in the first half, to maintain the shutout.
In Virginia's second game, the Cavaliers recorded a scoreless draw against No.4 ranked UC-Santa Barbara. The Cavalier's biggest opportunity came in the 76th minute when sophomore Nico Colaluca found a loose ball in the box and blasted a shot off the right post. In the 80th minute, Colaluca received his second yellow card of the match, forcing Virginia to play a man down for the remainder of the match. UC-Santa Barbara came close to scoring in the first overtime, when in the 95th minute, Gaucho forward Eric Avila was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Tyler Rosenlund took the kick for UC-Santa Barbara, but Virginia's Ryan Burke made the save, capping off his second shutout of the season. Virginia outshot the Gauchos 14-12, and Kyle Reynish made seven saves in net for UC-Santa Barbara. The Cavaliers concluded the Classic 1-0-1, finishing in second place behind California (2-0-0).
