The Virginia field hockey team opened ACC play Sunday with a 1-0 loss to No. 17 Boston College. The Eagles got on the board 13 minutes into the game and never relinquished the lead. With the loss, the Cavaliers move to 5-4 on the season.
Virginia denied Boston College a single short corner and allowed only one shot the entire second half. Despite out-shooting the Eagles 3-1 in the final 35 minutes, Virginia could not put the ball in the cage. The loss snaps Virginia's three-game winning streak overall and its two-game winning streak against ranked opponents. Redshirt freshman Amy Desjadon manned the cage for the Cavaliers and recorded five saves.
Virginia returns to action Wednesday night against Longwood. The team will welcome back Mia Link and Katherine Blair, who represented America in the Junior World Cup the past two weeks. Longwood enters Wednesday's game with a 2-6 record and is in the midst of a five-game losing streak. Virginia has won the last two meetings with the Lancers a combined 13-0.
