'Nine Lives': Famous faces appear in intertwining stories

This weekend's Virginia Film Festival will culminate with a special presentation of Rodrigo Garcia's new film, Nine Lives. The independent release features an A-list cast including Glenn Close, Sissy Spacek, Kathy Baker, Dakota Fanning, Aidan Quinn and Robin Wright Penn. The Film already has won numerous awards and has screened at the 2005 Locarno Film Festival.

The film follows the lives of nine women, each imprisoned by some aspect of her life. Their stories center around the trivial or less important matters in their lives.

The artistic Garcia shares each of the women's stories not as individual segments, but as one continuing and uninterrupted shot. Characters from one story continuously reappear in other stories as different people; thus Garcia creates a unique method of intertwining the individual stories and making them one whole. What audiences may find surprising is that this complex and imaginative full length feature was filmed in 18 days.

Director Rodrigo Garcia and actresses Sissy Spacek and Kathy Baker will be making appearances at the screening. After the film, there will be a question and answer session with the audience. This entire cinematic experience is sure to be an exciting and unforgettable one that you won't want to miss this weekend.

See Nine Lives at 7 p.m. Sat. at the Paramount Theater.
